Effects of methyl parathion on shellfish culture important to the economy of Thailand

Acute effect of methyl parathion (MPT) was studied by static exposure of juvenile Penaeus monodon to concentrations of 0, 1, 2, and 3 ppb for 96 hours. The hemolymph, hepatopancreas, nerve tract, muscle and gills were collected for biochemical, enzymatic, histopathological immunological, microbiological and ultrastructural studies. The amount of serum protein appeared to vary with MPT concentration. At least 15 bands of protein were observed, and two of these were of high molecular weight. The acetylcholinesterase activity in muscle and nerve tissues was significantly inhibited by MPT. Inflammatory responses in gill, muscle and hepatopancreatic tissue were observed in MPT exposed shrimp. We also found that the SGOT and creatinine levels were significantly different for the test and control groups. Chemotactic and phagocytic activity of haemocytes showed significant reduction after exposure to high MPT concentrations. Phagocytic activity was not observed in ultrastructural examinations but hepatopancreatic cells were altered in and MPT dose related manner. The results from out studies suggest that water should be monitored for insecticides before it is pumped into shrimp aquaculture units.
