Candida mogii ATCC 18364 was cultivated in continuous culture with cell recycle, where high cell density (C sub(x) = 30.05 g/l, Y sub (x/s) = 0.25 g/g was obtained under aerobic condition, at a relatively high recycle ratio (R = 0.75). At a lower recycle ratio (R = 0.50), a relatively high xylitol yield (Y sub(p/s) = 0.3 g/g was obtained under oxygen-limited conditions as expected. The specific rate of xylitol formation was also enhanced under oxygen-limited condition (q sub(p) = 0.028 g/g at the lower recycle ratio (R = 0.50), whereas the volumetric productivity of xylitol was remarkably higher (q sub(p) = 0.160 g/l/h at the higher recycle ratio (R = 0.75). The maximal volumetric productivity of xylitol (Q sub(p) = 325.62 mg/l/h obtained in continuous culture with two-step cell recycle, was 3.29 and 5.22 times higher than those obtained in continuous culture with single-step cell recycle and in batch culture, respectively.
