Evaluation of laboratory lime requirement (LR) methods on soils of the Pandamatenga region of Botswana

Buffer predicted lime requirements (LR) of 18 acidic surface soils of the Pandamatenga region were compared to soil-CaCO3-moist incubation method determined actual LR through regression analysis. The buffer methods were compared on the basis of their ability to estimate the actual LR to a target pH 6.5. The SMP-DB and the SMP-SB were significantly (P0.001) correlated to soil-moist-incubation method with correlation coefficients was equal to .994 and .989 respectively. The Yaun-DB and AE-SB methods were significantly (P0.01) correlated to soil-moist-incubation method with correlation coefficients was equal to 0.58 and 0.53 respectively. The actual LR was significantly correlated (P0.001) with organic matter and clay content, exchangeable acidity and aluminum and extractable aluminum. The SMP-SB buffer has been recommended for use in the laboratory routine analysis because of its performance, simplicity and speed.
