Recycling community wastewater treatment by using bacteria media and pipe aeration

This study was devided into 2 steps. The first step involved design and construction of biological wastewater treatment system by cultivating bacteria on several undulating plastic tubes. Air was slowly fed to enhance effectiveness of oxygen diffusion to the maximum level. The second step involved chemical treatment for reuse in which Polyaluminiumchloride (PAC) was used as coagulant. In this study, RIT main campus wastewater dumped with toilet waste was used in the treatment system. The wastewater contained 150 mg/l of average BOD5 and 0.33 kg BOD5/hr of average BOD5 loading. It was found that the biological wastewater treatment system was able to treat the wastewater at the flow rate of 50 cubic m/day, with high effectiveness, 94.05 percent of average BOD5 and 93.85 percent of average COD could be reduced. After treated in the second step, the overall effectiveness reduction of BOD5 and COD of the system was 97.96 percent and 97.55 percent respectively and no suspended solid value was found. In addition, the water obtained was of good quality and reuseable.
