Development of sisal fiber reinforced roofing sheets

This study is aimed at investigating the feasibility of using randomly distributed short sisal fiber reinforced cement motar composite as low cost roofing material for tropical countries. This fiber content and compacting or casting pressure were the main parameters varied in order to obtain the optimum material. Bending, impact resistance, water absorption, water tightness, shrinkage, fire resistance and exposure tests were performed in accordance with the relevant ASTM standard and Industrial Product Standard where available. Test results showed that a composite with a fiber length of 2.5 cm., a fiber content of 2 percent and casting pressure of 0.12 MPa was considered to be the optimum composite. The bending resistance and deflection at ultimate load obtained for sisal fiber roofing sheets are less than that of asbestos corrugated roofing sheets. The sisal fiber roofing sheets exhibit impervious, fire resistance properties and possess adequate durability in the short term. On a material cost basis, the composite can be considered a low cost alternative to corrugated galvanized iron and asbestos cement sheeting.
