Effects of replacement of ground corn by cassava chips in diets of lactating dairy cows fed ruzi grass silage

Twenty-four crossbred (50-80 percent Holstein Friwsian) cows in early-lactation were assigned to one of the three treatments according to a randomized blocks design to study the effect of dietary treatment on feed intake, ruminal fermentation, milk yield and milk composition. Cows were offered to treatment diets containing 0, 25 and 50 percent of cassava replaced to ground corn with ruzi grass silage as a roughage source. Based on this experiment, dietary treatment did not influence feed intake, ruminal pH and volatile fatty acid concentration but ruminal ammonia concentration tended to decrease with cassava inclusion. Higher level of cassava in the diet resulted in lower (p0.05) plasma urea concentration. There were no significant differences in milk yield or milk composition from dietary treatments. The results revealed that diet containing upto 50 percent cassava as energy source performed as well as corn based diet and therefore cassava can be considered as a satisfactory replacement for corn in lactating dairy cows fed ruzi grass silage.
