Effects of zeolite and deodorizer on production performance, ammonia reduction and hematological changes in broilers

Eighty-four-day-old broilers were divided into 3 groups of 28 birds with 4 replications in each group. Chickens in group 1 were untreated control, chickens in group 2 were given 1 percent zeolite in feed from 1 to 42 days of age, and chickens in group 3 were sprayed with 1:100 deodorizer solution on top of the dropping. Chickens in group 3 had lower ammonia concentration than those in group 1 and 2. Body weight gain, feed conversion rates and average daily gain in group 3 were also significantly higher than group 2 but were similar to group 1. The mortality rates were not different among all groups. Moreover, at the end of experiment, the heterophil and lymphocyte ratio (H/L ratio) of chickens in group 1 was found to be significantly increased as compared to the beginning. There was no significant change in H/L ratio of chickens in group 2 and 3. This may indicate that chickens in group 1 tended to have more stress than the others. It can be concluded that both zeolite and deodorizer have beneficial effect on reducing ammonia concentration in poultry house. However, these agents needed to be tested in a larger scale poultry production to assess their efficacy.
