Development of antifungal topical dosage form from crude extract of medicinal plants

Purpose of this study is to investigate the antifungal activity of Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kruz and Lawsonia inermis Linn.. The dried leaves were extracted by water and 95 percent ethanol and concentrated in rotary evaporator and then dried in freeze dryer. After that the watery and alcoholic extracts were tested against Candida species, Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum gypseum. The results showed that alcoholic crude extract of R. nasutus (L.) Kurz exhibited antifungal activity against E. floccosum and T. rubrum but has no effect against M. gypseum and Candida sp. Crude extract of R. nasutus (L.) Kurz was developed to gel dosage forms and tested against E. floccosum and T. rubrum comparing with 1 percent tonalfate cream. The gel also demonstrated antifungal activity and its clear zones were larger than those of crude extracts but smaller than those from 1 percent tonalftate cream.
