Effect of calcium on growth and post harvest quality of Chinese celery grown in soilless culture

Effect of calcium on the growth and post harvest quality of Chinese celery was conducted under soiless culture. The nutrient solution was modified using 3 standard nutrient solutions; Knop's 1865, Hoagland's, and Shive's. Calcium was added at 3 levels at 0, 25, and 50 ppm in which non circulate nutrient solution was used. A Randomized Complete Block was designed. The result showed that the modified Knop's 1865 added 50 ppm of calcium had the highest shoot growth rate. In addition, it was found that the celery in the modified Knop's 1865 added 50 ppm of calcium had the highest of crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), leaf area index (LAI), specific leaf area (SLA), net assimilation rate (NAR), fresh weight, dry weight, leaf area, and total soluble solid. Using scoring test of 9 semi-trained panelists in this study to quantify the post harvest changes of the celery, the result showed that the celery in the modified Knop's 1865 adding 50 ppm of calcium had the highest quality score. Furthermore, the celery kept in room temperature for 5 days did not show any different in the testing score. However the panelists gave the lower score at 5 days after harvesting.
