Effect of storage conditions on seed quality of marigold (Tagetes erecta.) cv. deep orangeade

Quality of Marigold (Tagetes erecta.) cv. Deep Orangeade seed were evaluated after stored in 3 types of containers which placed in 2 different room conditions. The experimental design was 2*3 factorial in CRD with 3 replications. The first factor included temperature controlled room at 24 deg C and ambient temperature room. The second factor contained of sealed plastic jar, cotton bag and plastic bag. This study was conducted at the Seed Laboratory, Horticulture Department, Faculty of Agricultural Production, Maejo University during January to December 1999. The results showed that marigold seeds stored in controlled room (any container) could maintain seed moisture content and seed germination was still high after 12 month of storage. The germination percentages of seed stored in plastic jar, cotton bag and plastic bag were 87, 77 and 82 percentage respectively. Seeds stored in sealed plastic jar in ambient temperature room still had germination percentage as high as those kept in controlled room (81 percent at the end of the experiment). However, cotton bag and plastic bag can be used to store marigold seeds in ambient room for 4 months before the germination showed a dramatically drop.
