Genetic variation of some traits in forage sorghum species after gamma irradiation

Study on genetic variation of three-forage sorghum; Klang Dong 1, sorghum sudan grass hybrid and sudan grass induced by gamma irradiation at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 krad. It is found that gamma irradiation at 15 to 60 krad cause forage sorghum germination more that 50 percent and mortality rate less than 50 percent. Treated seeds in sublethal dose were planted to observed genetic variation of four agronomic characters i.e. plant height, number of leaves per plant, shoot fresh weight and number of days to flowering in M1 and M2 generation. The results showed that high heritability in agronomic characters effected by a sublethal dose f gamma irradiation particularly at 15 and 30 krad, excluded shoot fresh weight. Presented work illustrated hat genetic variation in 3 species of forage sorghum could be induced by gamma irradiation especially qualitative characters.
