Study on the impact of intensive marine shrimp farms effluent on sediment quality in Kung Krabaen Bay, Eastern Thailand

Results of the investigation on the impacts of shrimp farms' effluent on bottom sediment quality in Kung Krabaen Bay indicated that the most affected area was wastewater canal. The impacts was decreased as the distance from the bay shoreline. The organic matter in wastewater canal, water supply canal, shoreline, 500 and 1,000 m from shoreline were 7.15, 6.58, 5.10, 3.37 and 1.69 percent, respectively. From the analysis of Kendall correlation coefficients, every parameters (except available phosphorus) showed the positive correlation. The decrease in organic matter content from wastewater canal to the central of the bay was significantly different (P0.01). From the soil texture analysis showed that the sand content in the bay was affected by the coastal sea outside the bay during monsoon season. And the silt content in the bay was affected by the shrimp farm' effluent during shrimp harvesting period which were significantly different among the survey stations (P0.01). The quantity of shrimp harvesting was an effect on C:N ratio and percentage of clay content in sediment which were also significantly different among the survey stations (P0.01).
