Study on efficiency of vetiver grass in comparison with contour bank in alleviating soil erosion rate

Field experiment was conducted during August 1993 - March 1995, on about 10 percent slope of Muak Lek soil series which is one of the shallow and erosive soil series. The experiment aimed to compare the soil and water erosion control efficiencies of vetiver grass method and contour bank method while the normal practice (without any soil conservation measurement) was used as control. It was found that, by considered the amounts of soil loss and corn yield received from those methods, the efficiency of the vetiver grass method compared to the contour bank method was 0.74. Some datas about the amounts of soil loss shown that, approximately, 360.0 kilograms/rai/year of the soil was lost in the control method, 186.0 and 146.0 kilograms/rai/year of the soil were lost in the vetiver grass and the contour bank method, respectively. Some other datas of corn yield, there were some 27.44 and 17.98 percent of corn yield increased in the contour bank and the vetiver grass method. The contour bank method gave the highest corn yield (568.91 Kg/rai), secondly, the vetiver grass method did (526.67 Kg/rai). And it was significant difference from the first two methods to the control that gave the lowest yield(446.40 Kg/rai). Moreover, one and a half year after planting, the vetiver grass has shown a very good performance in the field to establish as the natural bank to alleviate soil erosion rate. Therefore, it could be recommended to the farmers to use the vetiver grass method for erosion control aspects in the future.
