Socioeconomic study was conducted from 52 sample farms or 10 percent of farm population in 3 villages around the Acid Soils Management Project area at Nakornratchasima Province. It was found that an average farm size is 31.35 rai. An average size of farm family is 4.8 persons which only 2.4 persons are working on farm. Farming in this area certainly depends on rain water, therefore farmers can grow only one crop a year. Major crops cultivated in this area are rice, cassava, mango, and custard apple which their yield is 232, 1,828, 260, and 70 kilograms per rai, respectively. Farmers grow rice for theirown family consumption. Their cash crops are only cassava, mango, and custard apple which generate net return 2,658, 4,729, and -735 baht per rai, respectively. They also raise some animals such as cattles, buffaloes, and chickens. They earn total net farm income about 11,400 baht per farm. They also earn off-farm income about 35,600 baht per family. Their total family income is about 47,000 baht per family. Major farming problems are: soil fertility decreasing, low price of farm products, and lack of water. For future farming plan, only 56 percent of them still want to grow the same crops as they are cultivating because they do not have experience in growing other crops. Therefore, in introducing acid soils management techniques with new alternative crops to them, problem solution should be done on water supply development, training on new crop cultivation, and marketing of new crops.
