Potential of coastal land utilization for mariculture planning and mangrove forests management in Andaman sea coast

Due to the high potential of coastal land for social and economic development, the large area of mangrove forest has been destroyed for shrimp farming which caused environmental deterioration and conflicts between landuse of various activities. In order to solve these problems, the Subcommittee of Coastal Land Development resolved on this matter by assigning the Department of Land Development to study the potential of coastal land in Andaman sea for aquaculture and zoning for ecological purpose to conserve mangrove resource which is scarce in the present time. The study found that the coastal land of Andaman sea, with an area of 1,535,273 rai, had an area of mangrove forest about 1,213,576 rai according to the coastal land utilization classification which was approved by the resolution of the council of minister on December 15, 1987. The Landsat 5 TM imagery interpretation indicated that during January 1990 - March 1991, the mangrove forest area was encroached mangrove forest land has an area of highly suitable for shrimp farming only 950 rai and moderately suitable for 3,205 rai. The majority of the mangrove area which is poorly suitable for shrimp farming is about 180,190 rai. The unfavourable quality of land for shrimp farming is potential acidity of the soil. The land quality assessment of an area outside mangrove forest area indicated that the suitable land for shrimp farming is about 132,401 rai which consists of an area of highly, moderately, poorly suitable about 1,739 rai, 23,634 rai, and 107,028 rai respectively.
