Change in cell structure and nutrient digestibility of corn stem treated with selected fungi

Corn stem of sweet corn were fermented with 8 species of fungi including Aspergillus spp., A. niger, S. pulverculentum, Trichoderma ressei, T. pseudokoningii, Chaetomium spp. Pleurotus sajor-caju and P. florida in order to improve nutritive values. Chopped 2-3 inches long corn stem were treated with each fungi with 4 replications. After fermentation for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days, samples of each period were randomized to fix in paraffin block. After sliced, rating index of loose cell structure were examined through microscope and photograph. In comparison with non-steriled and non-inoculated corn stem, the most loose cell structure started at 14 days of fermentation with Aspergillus spp., A. niger, T. pseudokonigii, Chaetomium spp. Pleurotus sajor-caju and P. florida. The most loose cell structure was found with corn stem treated with A. spp. and P. sajor-caju at 14 days. The digestibilities of protein in all ration of each treated-corn stem were 75-79 percent, when fed qrowing quail with forced feeding method. When using broiler, the protein and dry matter digestibility of mixed 15 percent selected treated corn stem diet were 65-75 percent and 76-80 percent. The digestibilities of fiber composition were relative low. No significance different in nutrient digestibilities among treatments, except for ether extract.
