Survey on the present situation of farmer's and middlemen's post-harvest practices regarding maize in Thailand

According to the field survey in 1987, there are three categories of corn harvesting area classified by cultivation behavior, they were, no-second crop area, 2-times cropping area and 2nd-crop-maize area. Farmers usually did not dry maize by themselves. Only 11.7 percent farmers dried their products by their drying facilities and 16.1 percent of farmers dried maize by piling up in the field. There was less price incentive to produce dry maize. All farmers in no-2nd-crop area store their maize for an average of 51.4 days. While in the other area, 47.2 percent of the farmers store their maize for about 17 days. Shelling procedure was done by middlemen's corn shellers in almost all cases. Only 4.3 percent of farmers done their own shellers. And broken kernel ratio by shelling was 0.33+-0.34 percent. 21 samples among 43 from farmers' storage and 34 among middlemen's drying field. There were difference of aflatoxin contamination levels among different area and storage duration. One sample collected from plant stands was infected by A. flavus. And about 43 percent of samples collected within 10 days after harvest were already infected by A. flavus.
