Research on drying ear maize with vinyl plastic house

To control aflatoxin during farmer's storage period at low cost, a vinyl plastic house was tried to apply. Original model was an open type with one layer of shelf. Modified one was a close type with three layered shelves to increase drying capacity. Results showed that in the improved multi-layered close type house, temperature inside and that of ear maize stored kept higher than a single-layered open type house. Moisture content of maize kernel decreased up to 20 percent within a week from the initial moisture content of 28 percent, and it was revealed that it took two weeks enough for drying maize up to 14 percent, a safety limit for storing ear maize in these condition. Single-layered open house also showed similar transition. But capacity of the modified house can be more than three times of the former one. This modified house has higher potential for practical use as a low cost drying facility. However, aflatoxin contamination was not controlled because of high relative humidity in the multi-layered but closed system. After this, it is necessary to modify to reduce relative humidity for practical use as a simple low cost drying facility with high efficiency. One solution is adding, for example, ventilating fan in the lower part or small heat sources.
