In-store treatment of high moisture maize with sulfur dioxide

Sulfur dioxide treatment burning pure sulfur was developed and improved for safe storage of high moisture ear maize. Ear maize was fumigated three times at one week intervals by sulfur dioxide burning sulfur of 0.06 percent to sample weight. Moisture content of kernel was 22.7 percent and during two months storage, it reduced to 14.2 percent. Aflatoxin contamination was controlled in the top and middle layer, which was near inlet of corn crib, but not in the lowest layer of corn crib. This was caused by the diffusion of sulfur dioxide gas. Where sulfur dioxide remains around 200 ppm, aflatoxin were scarcely detected.
