Development of sweet corn hybrid variety for agro-industry

Development of sweet corn hybrid variety was applied research project based on art and science of Plant Breeding, in order to develop an elite sweet corn hybrid for serving the expansion of Agro-industry as export goods. The implementation was carried out about 3 years, during 1996-1998 including 8 crops season in Maejo University, Mae Sa Mai Royal project station and Farmer field in Chiang Mai. The research procedures consisted of Germplasm evaluation and collection of sweet corn inbred lines, improvement and selection of inbred lines, test cross for F1 hybrid varieties, regional yield and quality trial of sweet corn hybrids, selection of an elite sweet corn hybrid variety, increase of the male and female parents, seed multiplication of the F1 hybrid variety, field test of the elite sweet corn hybrid in farmer condition, and a feasibility study of the fresh sweet corn ears processing in Agro-industry factory. As a result, the elite sweet corn hybrid : CMS 1540no.51 F1 was derived. The good properties were listed as early maturity sweet corn with 48 and 51 days to tasselling and silking, 65-70 days to harvest. Uniform plant type with average 180 cm plant height. A fresh ear weight was approximate 320 gm or 1,920 kg/rai with tender quality and 14.6 percent Brix suitable for table and fresh ear market. Moreover, the variety was also appropriate the process of whole kernel in brine if blanching or treated by boil water. The product quality after blanching was similar to the standard ATS 2 variety. The 65 kg of the F1 hybrid seed were processed from a small scale seed multiplication plot and disseminated during 1998 rainy season to 1999 dry season to 57 farmers upon request within 12 provinces.
