Acceptance of biomass fuel in Thai rural households case study : Amphoe Klong Luang Patumthani province

Problem from crop residues and weeds which can often be seen scattering in the rural areas can be eliminated by the application of solid fuel briquettes technology. Solid fuel briquettes serve the efficient recycle propose as well as producing the regular size briquettes easy to store and transport. The production technology has been developed through a few decades, but such briquettes were used by limited amount of consumers due to their attitude. The study analyzed some properties of the produced briquettes made from rice husk (solid fuels) and Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes Solms. as green fuels) such as volatile matter, moisture content, fixed carbon, ash contents, calorific values, and water boiling test. It was found that green fuel samples present higher value of volatile matter, moisture, and, calorific values, but lower fixed carbon and ash contents than the solid fuels. However, heat utilization efficiency of the green fuels through the energy balance study was lower than the solid fuels. It was also found that the population preferred to use the sample briquettes when there was no better choice which was more convenient fuel such as LPG available in the areas. Moreover, they preferred rice husk briquettes than the green fuels.
