The Botswana National Tree Seed Centre which opened in 1998 is currently implementing a programme of seed testing of priority tree species. These consist of indigenous trees which are in high demand at government nurseries and about which little is known. Included in this group is Faurea saligna Harvey (Proteaceae) (Beechwood). In Botswana F. saligna is found in the extreme south-east corner of the country around Gaborone. It also occurs in Zimbabwe and South Africa. It is a small to medium sized semi-deciduous tree (7-10m, max. 20m). The trees tend to have narrow crowns and slightly drooping foliage. The narrow leaves are long and pointed. The fruit is a small brown nutlet with long silky white hairs containing a single spherical seed.The nutlets have slender, persistent red styles which appear as woolly pinkish-white spikes (ICRAF, 1998).
