The rural population in Mozambique is about 71% of the country's population (INE, 1997). Most of these people depend on forest resources and subsistence agriculture. Medicinal plants are some of the most important non-wood forest products that are utilised by local communities. Their value acts as an incentive for the sustainable management of forest resources and for the conservation of biodiversity. More than 10 000 medicinal plants (of forest and non-forest origin) are used for medicinal purposes worldwide (FAO, 1999). The World Health Organisation estimates that about 80% of the population of developing countries depends on traditional medicine, mostly plants, for their primary health care needs FAO, 1997).
