The primary introduction of the promising cold resistant hybrids of almond and their phenological and pomological characteristics

In order to obtain new cold resistant and late flowering almond varieties with desirable pomological and vegetative characteritics, and suitable nut characteritics, a program of hybridization between selected superior hybrids and late flowering almond varieties was carried out in 1998. In this research 1120 hybrids obtained from 23 different combinations of crosses were studied. Seeds were collected from mother trees, were planted in plastic vases after passing of stratification stages. After one year the seedlings were transferred to the orchard to evaluate. IBPGR descriptors were used to evaluate more than 40 phenotypic characteristics. In various phenological stages of hybrids trees, many vegetative and reproductive traits and nut characters, such as date of blooming, corolla shape, petal color, length and width of leaf, nut weight, kernel doubling, kernel weight, petiole length, present of hairs on leaf surface etc. were measured and recorded in the orchard and laboratory.
