[Imapact of straw incorporation on nitrogen regime of a sod-podzolic loamy sand soil]

The present paper provides summarized data from the field trials and lysimetric tests conducted at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture's Voke Branch. The experiments involved monitoring of mineral nitrogen leaching after straw +N30 incorporation and estimating of the variation in mineral nitrogen reserves in the soil profile up to 1m depth. Experimental evidence suggests that incorporation of barley or winter rye straw can increase mineral nitrogen concentration in the subsoil horizons during the October-November period, if the precipitation content exceeds the normal rate. In Lithuania when climatic conditions are normal in the autumn (monthly precipitation 50-60 mm) straw incorporation does not exert any marked effect on the quality of drainage water
