Effect of fertilizer application and crop rotation on wheat grain quality

Studied in this paper in stationary field trials were the effects of two-field (maize-wheat) and three-field (maize-soybean-wheat) crop rotations with and without fertilization (established in 1946/47 and 1969/70, respectively) on winter wheat grain quality. It was determined that grain yields decreased gradually and that this effect was more pronounced in the non-fertilized rotations than in the fertilized ones. It was also observed that the three-field rotations performed better than the two-field ones. Fertilizer application had a favourable effect on volume and absolute grain masses. The effects of crop rotation on these two traits were for the most part not significant. Fertilization increased grain protein content significantly in the two-field rotations and only slightly in the three-field one. The effects of fertilization and crop rotation on the wheat grain technological characteristics studied depended on the year and also partly on the treatment, but in most cases this influence was not significant. The reason for that probably lies in the fact that the trial uses the cultivar Pesma, whose grains have excellent qualitative characteristics.
