Effect of fertilization and crop rotation on seed viability in winter wheat

A stationary field trial was set up to study the effects of two- and three-field crop rotation with and without fertilizer application on seed yields and vigor in winter wheat. It was determined that seed yield decreased gradually and that the decline was greater in the unfertilized treatments than in the fertilized ones. The three-field crop rotation was found to be advantageous over the two-field one. Fertilizer application had a positive effect on seed germination energy and viability as determined by the accelerated ageing test and, especially, the cold test. Seed germination energy and viability were somewhat higher in the three-field crop rotation, but the differences were not significant in some of the study years. Except for the years with stress, the number of non-viable and diseased seeds and abnormal seedlings did not depend in any major way on either the fertilizer application or crop rotation. However, the cold test showed that there were significantly more ungerminated and diseased seeds in the unfertilized fields. Fertilization and crop rotation had no effect on the percentage of abnormal seedlings.
