Characterization of soil used for potato production at the DP PD Maglic property at Maglica [Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro)]

The study has led to the following conclusions: Chernozem analysis showed that the soil is highly suitable for obtaining high and stable yields of top quality potato. The good supply of the soil with total nitrogen and readily available phosphorus and potassium allows high yields to be obtained under conditions with sufficient moisture and irrigation. It was determined that the microbial abundance is very high and that the condition of the soil allows humus synthesis and mineralization to proceed normally. The heavy metal content (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) was below the maximum allowable concentration. No heavy metal effects on microbial abundance were observed. The microbiological analysis of the soil has shown the chernozem plots to be suitable for potato production. Generally, the chernozem samples gave no indication of increased radioactivity that would be a threat to food production. The concentrations of 137Cs activity measured should not endanger the safety of the food produced on the plots, given the transfer factors of this isotope into plants.
