This paper overview a proposed methodology for safety management of large dams in Serbia, which includes procedures for evaluation of dam monitoring system and dam safety, and principles, functions and hierarhy of the safety management system. Evaluation of monitoring systems and dam safety is based on qualitative engineering judgment of listed relevant parameters, from which the overall rating is derived following prescribed quidelines. Thus the monitoring system is evaluated through evaluation of the 10 parameters. Each of listed parameters is examined and scored, taking into account characteristics of the considered dam, events that might endanger its stability, and necessity instrumentation and procedures needed for appropriate monitoring. Scores are decriptive. Overall score for whole monitoring system is based on presribed combinations of the mentioned individual parameter scores. The methology also elaborates: basic principles, function, hierarchical levels and subjects of the dam safety management system, and defines measures to be taken when the dam safety is jeopardized.
