Household and stored-food insects recently introduced into Italy

The dispersion of synanthropic and stored-food insects to temperate zones from the tropical and subtropical regions of the world started long ago and continues to the present, favoured by trade. As of the post WWII years, with the increase in international trade, this phenomenon has become more intense, as it has for insect pests of crops; nevertheless, only some of exotic species associated with stored products exceed a threshold of alarm and are identified and recorded in literature. The present paper, without claiming to be complete, contributes to studies of this phenomenon and its trend over the last sixty years. At least fifty species related to foodstuffs and the environment where food products are stored, processed or distributed have been incidentally introduced into Italy for the first time during the period under examination. Some of these were simply intercepted, others have become adventive or acclimatized in our lands. The highest number of newly introduced species pertain to the order Coleoptera, followed by Psocoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Blattodea. An evaluation of the frequency of new introductions within the span here considered allows us to point out a greater increase in the phenomenon as of the second half of the seventies, as a consequence of increasing international trade and in correlation with more frequent findings of exotic species of crop and forest pests

L'introduzione accidentale in Italia di insetti esotici delle derrate e dell'ambiente antropico con i trasporti e i commerci è iniziata in tempi remoti e si è accentuata dal secondo dopoguerra in poi, con l'intensificarsi dei traffici internazionali. Senza pretese di completezza, il presente lavoro contribuisce allo studio del fenomeno e del suo andamento nell'ultimo sessantennio. Almeno una cinquantina di specie di interesse per la problematica alimentare sono state segnalate per la prima volta in Italia dal 1945 a oggi. Alcuni di tali infestanti si sono stabilmente insediati e diffusi, altri forse o sicuramente non si riproducono, ma vengono ripetutamente intercettati perché accidentalmente reintrodotti. Il maggior numero di specie di nuova introduzione appartiene all'ordine Coleoptera, seguito da Psocoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera e Blattodea. La valutazione della frequenza di nuove introduzioni nell'ambito del periodo considerato ci consente di evidenziare un maggiore incremento del fenomeno nella seconda metà degli anni '70, in conseguenza dell'incremento del mercato internazionale e in concomitanza con ritrovamenti più frequenti di specie esotiche di parassiti delle colture e delle piante forestali
