Effects of chemical treatments with hydrobromic acid and sodium hydroxide on the energetic values and cell wall constituents of some agricultural wastes

The effects of different concentrations of hydrobromic acid (HBr) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (0, 3, 6 ml HBr 47; and 3, 6 g NaOH/100 g DM) on gross energy, metabolizable energy (ME) and cell wall constituents [neutral-detergent fiber (NDF), acid-detergent fiber (ADF) and acid-detergent lignin (ADL)] were evaluated in wheat straw (WS), sunflower seed shells (SSS), olive cake wood (OCW), peanut shells (PS) and date palm seeds (DPS). Chemical treatments increased ME and decreased cell wall constituents significantly (P0.05) for all samples, except DPS. There was no effect for HBr or NaOH treatments on the gross energy values of all the experimental samples. The treatment of 6; HBr or NaOH had the highest effect for WS and SSS, resulting in 22; or 15; reduction in NDF, respectively, whereas both treatments had the same effect on OCW and PS, reducing NDF by 10;. ADF and ADL decreased over the control by 7-14; and 8-32;, respectively. The effect of chemical treatments was more intense on hemicellulose fraction than on cellulose. ME in samples treated with 6; HBr or NaOH was higher than the one of samples treated with 3;. The highest ME values were shown in DPS and the lowest ones in OCW. [Sono stati valutati gli effetti di concentrazioni diverse di acido bromidrico (HBr) e sodio idrossido (NaOH) (0, 3, 6 ml HBr 47% e 3, 6 g NaOH/100 g di SS) sull'energia grezza, l'energia metabolizzabile (ME) e i costituenti della parete cellulare [fibra neutro-detersa (NDF), fibra acido-detersa (ADF) e lignina acido-detersa (ADL)] su paglia di frumento (WS), tegumenti del seme di girasole (SSS), frazione legnosa della sansa di olive (OCW), gusci di arachidi (PS) e semi di palma da datteri (DPS). I trattamenti chimici hanno determinato un aumento di ME e diminuito significativamente i costituenti della parete (P0,05) in tutti i campioni, eccetto DPS. Non è stato riscontrato alcun effetto dei trattamenti con HBr o NaOH sull'energia grezza di tutti i campioni.
