English. Forests cover at least a third of the European territory, although the extent varies significantly among the different Countries. Natural and semi-natural forests are amongst the ecosystems richest of biodiversity, but few parts of these habitats have survived into the 21st century. What remains is usually represented by restricted areas with a high level of fragmentation. The Habitat Directive contains a list of at least 59 forest types in urgent need of conservation, which, together, represent about 6.4% of the total EU forests. The management of such areas is quite difficult because of their complex structure and composition. This article describes the principal forest types covered by Natura2000 and some suggested management options

Le foreste naturali e seminaturali sono fra gli ecosistemi più ricchi di biodiversità, ma pochi lembi di questi habitat sono sopravissuti fino al ventunesimo secolo. Ciò che rimane è di norma rappresentato da aree limitate, con un livello elevato di frammentazione. La direttiva Habitat contiene una lista di almeno 59 tipi forestali meritevoli di protezione, che, nel loro insieme, rappresentano circa il 6,4% delle risorse forestali dell'UE.
