Evaluation of the mechanical properties of metal cans in relation to their profile

Production of tinplate, the material most frequently used for food cans, undergoes continuous developments aiming at progressively reducing the weight of materials for economical and environmental reasons. This results in a decrease of can structural performances. In order to evaluate the influence of type of material and can profile on can mechanical properties, different kinds of tinplate used for laboratory tests and industrial production were chosen. Double-reduced tinplate (DR550) with batch and continuous annealing and single-reduced (T6S) tinplate with batch and continuous annealing were used for can bodies and ends, respectively. From the different types of tinplates, 8,000 cans were produced with two different bead profiles, both for can bodies and ends. Can body presented 5+5 beads with different profiles: standard (C) and deeper (D) profiles. Can end mechanical properties were evaluated and can profiles were studied. Furthermore, resistance to axial and radial loadings was measured. Finally, residual stresses were measured at various can locations (the stresses were also measured before and after vibration test in some cans filled with the product). The controls made on the various kinds of cans evidenced that cans with different bead profiles presented different mechanical behaviour. Also number and depth of bead can ends resulted in different expansion behaviour. Residual stress measurements by X-ray diffraction on cans highlighted the practical importance of some factors, such as, for instance, bead type on can bodies and bead number on can ends

La produzione della banda stagnata, il materiale più usato per le scatole per alimenti, è soggetta a continui sviluppi, che tendono a ridurre il peso del materiale per motivi economici e ambientali, con conseguente diminuzione delle prestazioni strutturali delle scatole. Allo scopo di valutare l'influenza del tipo di materiale e della geometria della scatola sulle proprietà meccaniche, sono stati selezionati diversi tipi di banda stagnata utilizzati per test di laboratorio e per la fabbricazione industriale delle scatole. Per la produzione del corpo scatola è stata impiegata banda stagnata a doppia riduzione (DR550), a ricottura statica e continua, mentre per lo produzione dei fondi è stata impiegata banda stagnata a singola riduzione (T65), a ricottura statica e continua. Dai diversi tipi di banda stagnata sono state prodotte 8.000 scatole con due profili di cordonatura, sia per il corpo, sia per i fondi. Il corpo scatola presenta 5+5 cordonature di diverso profilo: standard (C) e più marcato (D). Il coperchio open top è di due tipi: a due (2C) e a tre nervature (3C). Sono state valutate le proprietà meccaniche dei fondi ed è stato eseguito uno studio sui profili delle scatole. È stata inoltre misurata lo resistenza al carico assiale e radiale. Infine, sono stati misurati gli stress residui in diversi punti delle scatole (misurati anche in alcune scatole riempite con il prodotto prima e dopo un test di vibrazione). I controlli hanno evidenziato che le scatole prodotte impiegando un diverso profilo di cordonatura presentano comportamenti meccanici differenti. Anche numero e profondità delle nervature sui coperchi determinano un diverso comportamento all'espansione. La misura degli stress residui mediante diffrazione a raggi X ha evidenziato l'importanza pratica di alcuni fattori, per esempio, il tipo di cordonatura dei corpi e il numero di nervature dei fondi
