The antigenic characteristics of proteins in Brachyspira (B.) aalborgi, and B. alvinipulli were analyzed in gel-immunodiffusion and microscopic agglutination tests. B. aalborgi NCTC 11492 reacted with anti-B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 serum in both tests, but B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 did not react with the anti-B. aalborgi NCTC 11492 serum. Anti-B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 serum absorbed with B. aalborgi NCTC 11492 reacted weakly with B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933. However, the anti-B. aalborgi NCTC 11492 serum absorbed with B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 reacted strongly with B. aalborgi NCTC 11492. On the other hand, in immunoblotting technique, both B. aalborgi NCTC 11492 and B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 possessed the 66-kilodaltons (kDa) protein, but the reaction between the 66-kDa protein in B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 and anti-B. aalborgi NCTC 11492 serum was weak. These results indicated that 66-kDa antigens are present in B. alvinipulli ATCC 51933 and the antigens are partially related to those of B. aalborgi NCTC 11492.
