Effects of calcium D-pantetheine-S-sulfonate on serum and liver lipids in normolipidemic animals

Determination was made of the hypolipidemic activity of pantothenic acid (PaA) derivative, calcium D - pantetheine -S- sulfonate(PaSSO3Ca), for comparison with that of pantethine (PaSS). This derivative was found to diminish the levels of lipids in normolipidemic animals. To clarify whether such effect would differ according to animal species, it was administered to mice, rats, hamsters and Japanese quail. Serum cholesterol(CH)was noted to decrease in mice, hamsters and Japanese quail, though not in rats. Reduction in serum triglyceride (TG) was noted in all the species but quail and was greatest in hamster. Almost the same results were obtained by PaSS treatment Determination was also made of lipids in lipoproteins. PaA derivatives were found to improve lipoprotein - profiles in hamsters. It is thus evident that the capacity of PaSSO3Ca to reduce lipid level varies according to species. To find whether this capacity would depend on sex, the derivative was administered to male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. Serum CH was found to increase only in males. PaSSO3Ca caused increased serum TG in both sexes. Neither of these compounds had any effect on lipid content in male lipoproteins while both affected this content in females. The hypolipidemic activity of PaSSO3Ca is thus shown to differ according to animal sex.
