Effect of change in photoperiodism on growth and flowering of Phalaenopsis plants in vitro

The effects of duration of light and dark periods on growth and flowering of Phalaenopsis in vitro and in vivo (Exp.1) and on ability of nutrient absorption (Exp.2) were investigated. Experiment 1. Effect of photoperiodism on growth and flowering of young plants. 1) The following two types of photoperiodism were instituted: a light period of 16 hours and a dark period of 8 hours (L16h+D8h) and L8h+D4h twice a day. No difference in the number of leaves and the leaf area was observed between L16h+D8h and L8h+D4h. When the photoperiodism was changed, significant increases were shown in the root number and root length. 2) When the photoperiodism was changed, no difference in the percentage of flowering plant, number of flower stalks per plant, number of flower buds per stalk, length of flower stalks and number of days to flowering was observed. Experiment 2. Growth acceleration of young plants and changes in nutrient absorption ability in vitro. 1) The fresh weight, leaf number, leaf area, number of roots and root length of young plants cultured in 20 hours (L8h+D12h) treatment did not differ from those of young plants cultured in 24 hours (L16h+D8h) treatment 2) The nitrate/nitrogen absorption quantity was high in the 20 hours treatment and lower in the 24 hours treatment, though the phosphate absorption quantity was higher in the latter.
