Studies on acid rain, 2: Contribution of atmospheric H2SO4, HNO3 and HCl to acid rains (pH=<4.0)

The contributions of atmospheric H2SO4, HNO3 and HCI to the acidity of rain were estimated by the normality ratio of SO42- NO3 and C1-in acid rains (pH <= 4.0), which were taken from 1974 to 1982 in residential district of Yokohama 1) HCI showed the highest contribution among three components. The mean ratio was 47.5% during 1974-1977 and 37.1% during 1978-1982. The main sources of HCI were thought to be the refuse incinerator and NaCl from the sea. The latter one reacts with atmospheric H2SO4 or HNO3 and produces HCI. 2) The ratio of H2SO4 and HNO3 showed a tendency of decrease and increase respectively year by year, likewise with the yearly variation of atomospheric SO2 and NO2 concentration. The ratio of H2SO4 was 33.2% during 1974-1977 and 34.3% during 1978-1982, but that of HNO3 was 19.3% and 28.6% in the same periods. 3) The contributions of three components at Kawasaki and Hiratsuka were almost the same values with that of Yokohama.
