The rock ptarmigan Lagopus mutus population of Japan: A review of its ecological studies

Ecological studies of the rock ptarmigan Lagopus mutus in Japan, in particular studies for estimating the numuber of territories, were reviewed. The number of territories was mainly estimated either by direct observation or by indirect observation (signs of its presence and the existance of its suitable habitat). The problem of the estimation by the existance of its suitable habitat was pointed out. It is necessary to census the rock ptarmigan and monitor its populations by simple and plain methods, because of learning its status quickly.
