Accuracy assessment of vegetation map in a case study of northern part of Nagano city [Japan]

To evaluate the accuracy of vegetation maps that Environmental Protection Agency reported in Japan, we made an original vegetation map in Northern part of Nagano city and we detected the differences between two vegetation maps by overlay using GIS(Geographic Information System). The percentage of area where two equivalent legends have same distribution each other was 56.0%. If a legend "city" eliminated in calculation, it was only 34.6%. We recognized the trends that dominant legends have often high percentage of agreement between two maps. We estimated three reasons of difference between two maps. The first reason is a vegetation change due to the time lags of mapping periods. The second one is an error of mapping. The third one is a matter of opinion in the classifying method. We discussed about the utility value of vegetation maps for studies of the Nature conservation and Environmental Sciences. We believe that this public data of vegetation maps are of wide use especially in the discipline of Conservation Ecology, e.g., wildlife habitat modeling, Gap analysis, or Biological Invasions. However, we should be careful in utilization of this data in the analyses in the diversity of plant communities or plant species diversity.
