An attempt to evaluate avian diversity based on species distribution area and taxonomic uniqueness
2005
Sugimura, K. (Forestry and Forest Products Research Inst., Tsukuba, Ibaraki (Japan))
Five objective indicators were made based on the size of species distribution area and taxonomic uniqueness, and diversity was evaluated as the sum of species evaluation. Evaluating nine areas resulted in different outcomes depending on which indicator to be used. Then, in order to be able to compare with a single criterion, weighted scores were calculated for five indicators based on subjective judgment by experts, utilizing AHP methodology. Finally, multiplying the weighted score for each indicator and the evaluated value based on each indicator and summing all the results calculated an integrated value for each area. As a result, Amami Island, where the number of species is small and there is a relatively large number of rare species, had the highest evaluation, followed by Mt. Hyonosen, where the number of species is large and there is a relatively large number of locally rare species.
