Bulking factor of sawdust in band sawing

When solid wood is converted into sawdust the volume of sawdust is larger than the volume of the kerf of the solid wood. The ratio between the sawdust bulk volume and the solid wood volume can be denoted as the "bulking factor" or the "sawdust-solid volume ratio." Since a large amount of sawdust is generated at sawmills, it is important to estimate its volume. This requires precise information about the bulking factor. The purpose of this study was to examine the bulking factor under various sawing conditions in band sawing. The bulking factors of the sawdust of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) , hinoki {Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.), and akamatsu (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) were measured under different sawing conditions. They ranged from 3.1 to 5.2 in this experiment depending on the species and sawing conditions. The results showed the bulking factor tended to increase with an increase in the green density and moisture content. The tendency in the feature of particles differed among the species. It is thought that not only the size of the sawdust particles but also their shape influenced on the bulking factor.
