An analysis of thermal structure in Kagaki dam lake by thermotracer

Using by Thermotracer (NEC Sanei Co.'s brand name of thermography), convection cells were researched from November 16, 2001 to January 17, 2002 at Kagami Dam Lake near Kochi City. Large convection cells were found on and after December 4, 2001. Following phenomena are found. 1) The low temperature zone (or belt) often appears when large scale convection cells are present. This zone is considered to be extremely low temperature water mass and even large scale convection cells are seemed to sink when the cell's edge reaches the zone. 2) At the bottom, the water temperature jumping layer (thermocline) were found at 28m - 30m deep from the water surface during November and the midst of December. The temperature changes 4 deg C through this layer. 3) Convection cells were found even in the morning on December 22 and January 17. 4) The biggest thermocline were found from near surface to 2.25m depth on January 9, 2002. 5) Vertical One Dimensional Convection Model developed by Kimura et al. (1993) were applied and the significance of how the cooled sinking surface water temperature be set for successful study of convection movement are recognized.
