New rice [Oryza sativa] varieties, "Sainokagayaki" and "Sainokirabiyaka", with multiple pest resistance

"Sainokagayaki" and "Sainokirabiyaka" are new rice cultivars developed at the Saitama Agriculture and Forestry Research Center in 2002. They were selected from a cross made in 1992 between Aichi 92 (later Maturibare) and Tamakei 88 (later Sainoyume), with the intention of developing multiple pest resistance and good eating quality. "Sainokagayaki" has the same maturing stage as Nipponbare. The plant type is an intermediate type. This variety seems to possess true blast resistance gene Pia, field resistance to blast, and resistance to stripe disease and green rice leaf hopper. However, field resistance to bacterial leaf blight is slightly inferior to that of Koshihikari. "Sainokagayaki" is tolerant to lodging with short culm and stiffness. It has an excellent apparent grain quality and good eating quality similar to Koshihikari. Its yield ability is similar to Nipponbare. "Sainokirabiyaka" has the same maturing stage as Nipponbare. The plant type is an intermediate type. This variety is tolerant to lodging with extremely short culm and stiffness. It seems to possess true blast resistance gene Pia, field resistance to blast, and resistance to stripe disease and green rice leaf hopper; it is moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight. "Sainokirabiyaka" has an excellent apparent grain quality and good eating quality similar to Koshihikari. Its yield ability is slightly lower than Nipponbare. Both of these varieties can be grown in the plains of Japan's temperate regions.
