Who refers what ?: An analysis on citations in core Japanese agricultural economics journals based on impact factor

Impact Factor (IF) is a journal evaluation method and is calculated based on the frequency that articles in the journal are cited. IF was supposed to be used by librarians in determining which journal is appropriate to accept. But recently, IF is used to evaluate research in the field of economics as well as natural science. Demura [I] calculated IF of the Journal of Rural Economics during 1998 and 2002. This study provides an IF of 7 other Japanese journals which relate to the field of agricultural economics during 1998 and 2002. The main results are as follows. First, on the basis of IF, the Journal of Rural Economics is the most frequently cited journal within the 8 journals. Second, almost half of all citations are from the same journal as the article is placed or from another article that the same author wrote.
