Research for the laborsaving cultivation of Japanese pear [Pyrus pysrifolia] 'Kousui' setting limits to the number of flower buds (mixed buds)

'Kousui' is the most popular and cultivated pear fruits in Toyama. Annual total working time for cultivation of 'Kousui' is 238 hours (/10a) on average, including such as for binding branch on trellis and fruits thinning. The major object of this research is to reduce the total working time. Our results are summarized as follows; 1) The interested cultivation method that set 21 (/m(2)) mixed buds at pruning and binding could produce a minimum sufficient yield of 3.0t/10a same as customary cultivation. 2) Setting 21 mixed buds at pruning and binding, the working time was reduced for about 3.1 hours (/10a). 3) Removing downward buds at disbudding, the working time for fruit thinning was reduced for 20.0 hours (/10a). In addition, this removing process brought about an increase in productivity of larger fruits. 4) Using the machines for binding branch and pollination, the working time was reduced for about 12.3 and 5.0 hours (/10a), respectively. 5) As whole effect of the laborsaving cultivation; The set of 21 mixed buds at pruning and binding reduces the total working time of the pruning to the fruits thinning for about 14.7 hours (/10a). The combination of the removal process with the use of both machines, also, reduces the total working time for about 13.1 hours (/10a). A series of the cultivation process brings about a reduction of working time for 27.8 hours (/10a), corresponding to 16% of the whole.
