In semi-natural grassland, Mt. Higashi Otafuku, floristic composition as a whole area has been becoming simpler, but diverse and unique community structure is seen around mountain trails. In the present paper, we aimed to clear how human trampling has an impact on the community structure and species diversity around mountain trails. Trampling did not always have an adverse effect on species diversity. Moderate soil compaction (3.0-7.5 kg/cm2), i.e. slight disturbance caused by trampling, increased the diversity to some extent. It is suggested that habitat for various herbs can be provided around mountain trails where trampling pressure is adjusted to be moderate.
