The income structure and management characteristics of herding households in Inner Mongolia: A case study of the eastern part of Hulunbeier City and Xingan League

In order to specify the profitability structure and management characteristics of herding households in Inner Mongolia, our paper begins by distinguishing the area under consideration according to the 33 flags, which represent stock farming regions in Inner Mongolia. Stock farming in Inner Mongolia can be divided into "prairie agriculture," "cattle/sheep prairie," "sheep prairie," and "cattle agriculture" regions. Among, these, the cattle/sheep prairie and sheep prairie regions are the more typical regions of the prairie livestock breeding terrain. Using this division, our paper provides an analysis of household profitability structure in the cattle/sheep prairie and sheep prairie regions and draws the conclusion that household income is restricted by pasture area and the number of livestock. To enhance profitability, animal herding households should not only enhance their labor productivity and prairie availability, but also increase the number of livestock they manage. At the same time, animal herding households should introduce improved breeds in order to raise productivity.
