Influences of the stem standing method and the standing stem number on the spear yield in the long-term harvesting cultivation of asparagus [Asparagus officinalis]

Three cultivation systems of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.), open field production, greenhouse production and forcing culture by laying crown in the bed, have been established in Nagano prefecture. Open field production is the most popular cultivating system, covering 70% of total asparagus field; young spears are harvested from April in that system. Further, open field production and greenhouse production have 3 types of harvesting term, only spring harvest, 2-season harvest and long-term (3-season) harvest. In the long-term harvesting cultivation, the spring harvest finishes middle in May and spears are harvested again in summer and autumn. However, the long-term harvesting cultivation wasn't established fully in Nagano prefecture. In this study, influences of stem standing methods and standing stem numbers on the spear yield in the long-term harvesting cultivation in an open field and greenhouse were investigated. 1. In the long-term harvesting system, the higher spear yield was obtained by suspending a spring harvest 2-3 weeks earlier than in the 2-season harvesting system, and by harvesting continuously from summer to autumn. 2. There are 2 types of mother fern culture on the long-term harvesting system, making mother fern all together and making mother fern in order of germination. There was no difference observed in the spear yield between the 2 types. 3. The growth of plants and GI' (growth index) in the long-term harvesting system increased in comparison with in the 2-season harvesting system. 4. The suitable standing stem number in long-term harvesting system was 5-6 per plant.
