We devised a safe and simple method to obtain pulmonary specimens for bacterial examination from pigs that died from pneumonia. Nidal lung tissues, pulmonary swabs, nasal cavity swabs and tonsils were obtained from 30 dead pigs with respiratory symptoms on 15 farms. The pulmonary swab specimens were obtained by using the trocar for cows. The trocar was stuck into the chest of dead pigs and the swab that was inserted after the inner core was removed was obtained for the pulmonary specimen. The rate of isolation of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae from nidal lung tissues, pulmonary swabs, tonsils and nasal cavity swabs in 26 pigs suspected of pleuropneumonia by macroscopic findings were 92%(24/26), 81%(21/26), 59%(10/17) and 31%(8/26), respectively. Since we could obtain the pulmonary materials from the dead pigs using the trocar, an autopsy of the pigs were not mandatory for the sampling of bacterial specimen from the affected lungs, and thus the propagation of the pathogen in the farm could be avoided. It was suggested that the present method was useful.
