Effect of several culture conditions on the development of lateral roots of Japanese radish sown in spring

The present investigations were conducted to clarify the effects of varying culture conditions on the development of lateral roots of Japanese radish sown in spring. 1. Root-zone temperature, just below 12 deg C during the first growth stage was used to stimulate the growth of lateral roots, resulting in the obstruction of root elongation at later growth stages. 2. This enhanced lateral root formation could be prevented by keeping soil temperatures at the proper high level. 3. Culture conditions from middle to late growth stages also had significant effects on the development of lateral roots. Larger number of thickened lateral roots tended to be produced when plants received a higher amount of basal fertilizer. 4. These experimental results indicated that suppression of root elongation during the first growth stage by low soil temperature and continuous rapid thickening growth during the root maturation stage are necessary for lateral root formation in Raphanus.
